The Evangelical Lutheran Church of São Paulo is a vital part of the Lutheran community. It is near Largo do Paiçandu in São Paulo’s historic center. The church was founded on Christmas Day in 1908. It quickly became a central meeting point for the German community during the early 20th century.

The Lutheran community in São Paulo organized in the 1800s. They lacked pastors initially. They faced challenges under the Catholic regime. On December 26, 1858, the first meeting occurred. It was held at the drugstore Ao Veado d’Ouro. Services were in German. Pastors from Rio Claro and Campinas attended until 1871. Then, Pastor Emil Bamberg founded the first Evangelical Lutheran community. It was called Egreja Evangélica Alleman.

After the Proclamation of the Republic of Brazil in 1889, the community gained religious freedom. In 1891, Pastor Emil Bamberg organized the community with 80 families. The statutes were registered in 1907. While raising funds for their temple, services were in a Presbyterian Church.

In 1906, brothers Daniel and Hermann Heydenreich donated land. The land was on the current Rio Branco Avenue. Construction finished on November 28, 1909. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of São Paulo was a place of worship even before it was completed.

The pastoral house was inaugurated in August 1908. Four months later, the Martin Luther church opened. The Christmas celebration saw carols sung by a choir. About five hundred people attended. Bells donated by the Heydenreich brothers rang out. Pastors from Rio de Janeiro, Campinas and other cities attended the celebration.

During World War I, the German community faced challenges. Brazil broke ties with Germany in 1917. Celebrations for the Protestant Reformation’s 400th anniversary were banned. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of São Paulo faced financial struggles.

World War II brought new issues. Brazil broke relations with Germany again. In 1943, troops were sent against the Axis powers. Services could no longer be in German. The shift to Portuguese integrated the community with Brazilians.

Architect Guilherme von Effe designed the Martin Luther Church. He also designed the São Paulo Conservatory of Dramatic and Musical Conservatory. This was completed in 1907.
