Gateway Christian Center, AG was once named Evangel Temple Assembly of God. It was founded in the early 20th Century. It played a significant role in modern church history. Pastor Don Evans led reconciliation between ethnic groups. This happened within the Pentecostal Church.

In 1971, Glenn Akridge preached a twelve-night revival. This was for the Assembly of God. The Assembly of God had bought a former body shop. During those twelve nights, one hundred nineteen people came to repentance.

By 1973, the Assembly built a new sanctuary. They moved from the old location. One of their members bought the old property. Several young people were not settled in a church. Wayne Mays encouraged Glenn Akridge to open a revival center.

Brother Akridge rented the former Assembly of God building. He held services on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. After some time, Glenn began to have regular Sunday services. Wayne Mays stepped in to help keep things going. Evangel Temple evolved from that beginning.

The church changed its name to Evangel Temple. Over the next six years, they experienced great revivals. Believers came from other church backgrounds. They were baptized in the Holy Spirit. In 1978, they purchased property. In 1979, they moved into their present facility.

In 1989, Evangel Temple began hosting a ministers conference. They provided free motel and meals for full-time ministers. Speakers were pastors of some of the largest churches in America.

Evangel Temple also hosted Women’s conferences. Women came from as far away as California. The church hosted Christmas programs. They provided a turkey or ham for each family attending. They gave gifts to every child. One year, they gave a bike to every child who didn’t already have one.

Evangel Temple may not be large in number. But visitors feel loved. They sense the presence of the Lord. They pray for the Lord’s presence every week. They pray for the anointing to fill the sanctuary. Believers are filled and healed. Sunday mornings are rich with the presence of the Lord.
