Gazing at the Evang. Trinitatiskirche, can you picture a blooming altar bed? This isn’t a typical floral arrangement. The altar window of Evang. Trinitatiskirche frames a view of a living altar bed, permanently in bloom. It stretches beyond the church grounds into Vienna’s “Paradise Grounds,” a public forest. This unique design connects every service at Evang. Trinitatiskirche to the beauty of creation. The Evang. Trinitatiskirche stands as a testament to community and faith. Nestled in Hütteldorf, part of Vienna’s 14th district, its story begins in 1954. The Lutheran congregation, formally established on December 6th, found its home on Freyenthurmgasse. A generous inheritance allowed them to purchase the land in 1963, paving the way for their future church. The Evang. Trinitatiskirche, designed by architect Sepp Schuster, opened its doors on Trinity Sunday in 1968. The high gable and glass facade, along with the distinctive wooden gable roof, make it a recognizable landmark. The dedication to the Holy Trinity is woven into the very fabric of the building. The interior layout forms an equilateral triangle, a symbolic representation of the Trinity. The dominant artistic feature is a large Trinity altar window, further reinforcing this central theme. The church’s history is marked by expansion and renovation. A 1992 addition and a two-story extension in 1994 provided more space for the growing community. The Diakonie-Gartenhaus, a garden house dedicated to charitable work, was added in 1999. The church underwent significant renovations in 2005 and 2010, modernizing the facilities while preserving its unique character. The Evang. Trinitatiskirche isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a hub of community outreach and social action. The congregation’s commitment to inclusivity led to the establishment of the Hephata Center in the 1960s. This center provides pastoral care for the hearing and visually impaired, a testament to their belief in serving all members of society. The church’s involvement extends beyond its walls. It played a key role in founding the Christoffel Blindenmission, a Christian organization dedicated to helping people with disabilities. The Gustav-Adolf-Verein, an aid organization supporting church maintenance, also has its secretariat within the church. The Evang. Trinitatiskirche embodies the spirit of community, faith, and service. From its unique architectural design to its commitment to social outreach, it stands as a vibrant symbol of hope and inclusion in Vienna.
