A simple cube of concrete brick glass and pine. That’s the Evang Glaubenskirche in Simmering. But this unassuming structure holds a fascinating story.

The Evang Glaubenskirche wasn’t always this way. It stands where a temporary wooden church once stood a humble predecessor serving the Simmering parish. This parish itself a relative newcomer to the Viennese religious landscape having gained independence in 1949.

Architect Roland Rainer won a design competition in 1952. His vision a modern marvel of simplicity. Construction began in 1962. The Evang Glaubenskirche was dedicated in 1963. Rainer’s design is striking. A near-perfect cube. The almost austere beauty is enhanced by the materials. The asphalt floor contrasts with the warmth of the pine wood. A glass cross above the altar lets light flood the sanctuary. A low glass wall behind the altar visually extends the space. Natural light is concentrated toward the altar. A small side chapel can be opened or closed as needed using a sliding wall.

The Evang Glaubenskirche isn’t just a church. It’s a complex. An eight-meter-high bell tower stands in an inner courtyard. Three bells ring out Glaube Liebe and Hoffnung faith love and hope. A covered walkway connects the entrance to the church portal. This design creates a secluded space a spiritual oasis in the urban environment. It’s a peaceful retreat. A unique spiritual haven in Vienna.

The Evang Glaubenskirche received a new organ in 1972. Built by Walcker-Mayer it features two manuals and a pedal. The church’s architecture and the community’s history are intricately interwoven. This building isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to faith community and modern design. It’s a vibrant center of religious life in Simmering. A true example of post-war Viennese architecture. The Evang Glaubenskirche continues to serve the Simmering community. It’s a special place for prayer reflection and spiritual growth. A truly unique church a treasure in the heart of Simmering.
