Waagner Biro widened the bridge deck in 1984. It expanded to accommodate six lanes with a width of 22 meters. The original bridge supported just four lanes. The steel support structure weighs 5500 tons.
Sadly, the construction of the Europa Bridge claimed the lives of 23 men. This unusually high number includes three engineers: Herbert Henning, Hermann Staf, and Hans Gaidoschik. A chapel was built to honor the lives lost. It sits on a hill on the west side of the Europa Bridge. Hubert Prachensky designed the chapel.
