Perhaps Howard M. Etchison sensed the shifting sands of Washington D.C. back then. Here we are at the Euclid, an apartment building he built between 1919 and 1920.

Etchison was a prominent early 20th-century developer in Washington. He chose Claughton West as the architect. West designed over 600 houses and 40 apartment buildings during his career.

The Euclid stands six stories tall. It has classical Italianate facades. Look at the variegated brown brick. Notice the limestone trim. The elaborate modillioned cornice is stunning.

Multi-family dwellings were slow to gain acceptance here. Other cities like Boston, New York, and Chicago embraced them earlier. But once Washington accepted them, apartment buildings became important. They shaped the city’s architectural fabric. The Euclid is a prime example of this shift. It reflects the rise of streetcar suburbs in the early 20th century. This was especially true after Washington’s rapid growth during World War I.

Let’s step inside the lobby of the Euclid. Take note of the two-level lobby. The herringbone terra cotta floor is exceptional.

The Euclid has 47 units. It was renovated between 2009 and 2011. This helped preserve its historical character.

The Euclid is more than just a building. It represents a turning point in Washington’s architectural history. It gained recognition. The Euclid was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. It also joined the DC Inventory in 2009.

So next time you pass by the Euclid, remember its story. Think of Howard M. Etchison’s vision. Remember Claughton West’s design. Consider the changing attitudes towards apartment living in Washington D.C. The Euclid stands as a reminder of the city’s evolution. It is a testament to its architectural heritage.
