Over eight million items. That’s a lot of knowledge isn’t it? Welcome to the ETH-Bibliothek. The ETH-Bibliothek in Zurich isn’t just a library. It’s a treasure trove of scientific and technical information. It’s the largest public scientific and technical library in Switzerland. It serves ETH Zurich a leading university in technology and natural sciences.

Founded in 1855 the ETH-Bibliothek has a rich history. Its first location was on St Peterstrasse in Zurich’s Old Town. Space was tight. The library moved to the Strauhof in 1861. Later it moved into the main ETH building. The library’s early growth wasn’t easy. Its initial budget was limited to 20000 francs annually for acquisitions. Imagine building a collection of this magnitude with such a small budget.

The ETH-Bibliothek didn’t just collect books. It built an impressive patent collection. This collection existed from 1896 to 1983. It contained millions of documents. However this proved too costly. It was later transferred to Bern. The library then focused on other special collections. These included a collection of research reports on microfiche. There were also science history books and images. A comprehensive map collection was added in 1972.

The ETH-Bibliothek embraced technology early. Computerization began in 1976. An integrated library system replaced punch cards for the catalog in 1980. The library created a virtual library in 1996. This included new acquisitions online resources and electronic journals. It played a key role in ETH Zurich’s virtual campus.

Today the ETH-Bibliothek continues to innovate. It offers online platforms. These provide access to millions of books journals and other resources. The Research Collection is a key platform for open access publishing. The library also participates in national initiatives. These initiatives digitize historic Swiss books and manuscripts. The ETH-Bibliothek is more than a library. It’s a vital hub for research innovation and the preservation of knowledge. It’s a dynamic institution. It consistently evolves to meet the needs of a changing world. The ETH-Bibliothek is truly a place of wonder. A place where the past future and present of knowledge converge. It’s an essential part of Zurich’s cultural landscape and a valuable resource for scholars and the public alike.
