Slightly removed from the city’s frenzy lies Etchūjima a place with a unique history. Etchūjima is an island with a surprisingly quiet atmosphere considering its central location. Today we will explore Etchūjima. We will uncover its past and present.

Etchūjima is home to Etchūjima Station. It opened on March 10 1990. The East Japan Railway Company operates it. The station is on the Keiyō Line. It is located 2.8 km from the line’s western terminus in Tokyo. In 2016 station numbering was introduced. Etchūjima Station was assigned the number JE03.

Interestingly Etchūjima Station has the fewest passengers of all JR stations in Tokyo’s 23 wards. Only 4011 passengers used the station daily in 2010. This makes it a less crowded entry point to the city.

The Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology has a campus on Etchūjima. The campus adds to the area’s academic atmosphere. This university formed in 2003. It was the result of a merger between two national universities. These were the Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine and the Tokyo University of Fisheries.

The Tokyo University of Mercantile Marine has a long history. Iwasaki Yatarō founded it as Mitsubishi Nautical School in 1875. In 1902 the school moved to the present-day Etchūjima Campus.

Etchūjima pier is located in Etchūjima Park. It offers water bus services. The pier is next to the Etchūjima swimming pool. The Etchūjima Campus of the Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology is nearby. You can find old restaurants around Monzen-nakamachi Station. Tsukishima Station has many monjayaki restaurants.

Etchūjima Park features a large anchor at its entrance. The pier provides scenic views of the Sumida River. It’s a pleasant place to gather. The pier’s hours are from 10 AM to 10 PM.

Etchūjima blends transport education and recreation. It’s a reminder of Tokyo’s multifaceted nature. Etchūjima offers a peaceful contrast to the city’s more bustling districts. Consider Etchūjima a unique destination.
