The Estadio Nacional is one of Honduras’ most important sports venues. This stadium has witnessed unforgettable moments and also heartbreaking defeats.

The Estadio Nacional Jos\u00e9 de la Paz Herrera Ucl\u00e9s is located in the Barrio Moraz\u00e1n of Tegucigalpa. It serves as home for Club Deportivo Olimpia, Club Deportivo Motagua, and Club Deportivo Lobos UPNFM.

Originally named Estadio Nacional Tiburcio Car\u00edas Andino, it was later renamed. The stadium honors Jos\u00e9 de la Paz Herrera Ucl\u00e9s. He was a celebrated football coach known as Chelato Ucl\u00e9s.

The stadium’s construction began during President Tiburcio Car\u00edas Andino’s administration. It aimed to promote sports among young people. The inauguration took place on March 15, 1948. The event featured a baseball game between Honduras and Cuba. A football tournament followed. Teams from Honduras, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Panama competed.

In 1955, the stadium hosted the Centroamericano y del Caribe championship. This prompted the construction of additional wooden stands on the south side. By 1978, a significant expansion increased the stadium’s capacity to 34000.

Over the years, the Estadio Nacional Jos\u00e9 de la Paz Herrera Ucl\u00e9s has hosted many events. These include the III Norceca in 1967 and the pre-World Youth Championship of 1979. Presidential inaugurations and concerts also took place here.

A giant screen was installed in 2009. Tigo, a mobile phone company, donated it. The screen cost $544096 US. It measures 15 meters long and 10 meters wide.

In 2023, the stadium underwent further renovations. The grass was replaced with a hybrid imported from Europe. Additionally, 18000 new seats were installed in the sun and shade areas.

The Estadio Nacional Jos\u00e9 de la Paz Herrera Ucl\u00e9s has hosted several major international football events. These include the CCCF Championship, CONCACAF Championship, and Copa Centroamericana. It is also the home of the supercl\u00e1sico. This is a match between rival teams Olimpia and Motagua.

Beyond football, the stadium has hosted American football events. The Americas Womans Bowl is the most popular. Concerts by famous artists like Vicente Fern\u00e1ndez and Luis Miguel have also drawn crowds.
