“2026 will be a great year for commuters!” This is what they say about Estação Orfanato. Right now we stand at a place of great anticipation. It is a place soon to become a vital hub in São Paulo’s expanding Metro system.

Estaçao Orfanato is currently under construction. It represents a significant step forward for the Linha 2-Verde. This line stretches east toward Penha. The goal is to ease congestion on other lines. These include the 3-vermelha and 11-coral.

Imagine the future bustle. Passengers will stream through here. They will connect to all parts of this massive city. Estaçao Orfanato is not just a station. It is a gateway. It promises quicker commutes and better access. The station will reduce the heavy traffic for thousands of daily passengers. Once completed, the 2-Verde line will span 23 km.

The story of Estaçao Orfanato began in the 2000s. It was part of the “Rede Distributiva” project. The project was modified at the end of that decade. But the Orfanato station remained. Public presentation occurred in 2012. Then the government authorized land requisitions for construction.

Construction faced hurdles. The project experienced delays between 2015 and 2019. Despite these challenges, planning continued. Infra7 Engenharia and Mendes Junior developed the architectural designs. Work finally restarted in January 2020.

Estaçao Orfanato borrows its name from the surrounding area’s history. In 1895, Father José Marchetti founded the Orfanato Cristovão Colombo. This was an orphanage in Ipiranga. Later, a second unit was planned in Vila Prudente. It separated boys from girls. This second orphanage greatly influenced the area. The street became known as Rua do Orfanato. This name was officially recognized in 1916.

The location of Casa Irmã Assunta Marchetti is near the station. It played a key role in the station’s naming. The station name fits four criteria. These are popularity, metropolitan scale, content, and form.

Deep beneath the surface, Estaçao Orfanato is taking shape. It lies 44 meters below ground. The station is set to open in 2026. It will serve an estimated 3,500 people per hour. It features a technical building and skylights. These skylights will allow sunlight to filter down into the station.

Consider the engineering. The tunnels were created using the NATM method. This involves excavating in stages. Concrete is sprayed for support. In one tunnel alone, workers removed 2,015 m³ of earth. They used 245 m³ of concrete and 4,617 kg of steel mesh.

As we stand here, remember the past. Think about the future. Estaçao Orfanato will soon be more than just a construction site. It will be a vibrant part of São Paulo. It will be a testament to the city’s growth and progress.
