Is this Heaven’s Gate? The entrance to Essinge kyrka, adorned with copper and cloud formations in relief, almost makes it seem so. Essinge kyrka, also known as the Church of Atonement, stands on the second highest point of Stora Essingen. Designed by Cyrillus Johansson, it was inaugurated on Thanksgiving Day in 1959. Johansson, renowned for structures like the Årstabron and Stockholm’s Centrumhuset, drew inspiration from Southern European architecture for Essinge kyrka. This is evident in the captivating arches of the church’s nave and its unique campanile, the freestanding bell tower that stands apart, a landmark visible from afar. Inside, Essinge kyrka is bathed in a warm, atmospheric light streaming through tall windows with multicolored antique glass. Look up and notice the captivating glass painting above the altar. It’s called “Farewell and Return” and was created by Einar Forseth, originally for the Karolinska Hospital chapel. But since 1988 it has graced Essinge kyrka with its beauty. The church is a harmonious blend of architectural grandeur and artistic brilliance, a testament to faith and human creativity. Even if you’re just passing by, the sight of Essinge kyrka against the Stockholm skyline is sure to leave a lasting impression.
