Did whispers ever echo in the halls of Escola Estadual Professor Raul Brasil? Whispers of fear? Whispers of dread? On March 13, 2019, the whispers turned into screams. Escola Estadual Professor Raul Brasil became the scene of unspeakable violence. A school shooting that shook Brazil to its core. Two former students, Guilherme Taucci Monteiro, 17, and Luiz Henrique de Castro, 25, stormed the school. They were armed with a .38 caliber revolver and a hatchet. Their attack was planned, fueled by a dark obsession with the Columbine High School massacre. They wanted to create even more carnage, to leave an even deeper scar. Before their assault on Escola Estadual Professor Raul Brasil, they murdered Taucci’s uncle at his car shop. They had reportedly planned other killings. This was not a spontaneous act. This was calculated, cold-blooded murder. The attack began during recess. Students were enjoying a break, unaware of the horror about to unfold. Taucci entered first, shooting two staff members and several students at point-blank range. He then stalked the halls, hunting for more victims. Castro followed, wielding the hatchet. He attacked the wounded, adding another layer of brutality to the senseless violence. The scene was chaotic, a terrifying mix of gunshots, screams, and the thud of the hatchet. Some students managed to escape. Some hid, their hearts pounding in their chests as they listened to the carnage outside. In the end, seven people died at Escola Estadual Professor Raul Brasil: five students and two staff members. Eleven more were injured. The attack ended when Taucci shot Castro, then turned the gun on himself. In the aftermath, investigators uncovered a chilling array of weapons at the school: a crossbow, a bow and arrow, Molotov cocktails, and a fake explosive device. The pair had planned the attack for a year, communicating on online forums known for extremist content. The massacre at Escola Estadual Professor Raul Brasil stands as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of hate and violence. It is a tragedy that continues to haunt Brazil.
