Did you know Eros Airport Tower oversees one of Southern Africa’s busiest airports? Here at Eros Airport Tower we stand just five kilometers from Windhoek’s city center. This airport is Namibia’s tourism gateway.

Eros Airport is a hub of general aviation and some commercial aviation. You will find Wilderness Air, Bay Air, Westair Aviation and Scenic Air here. This airport hosts commercial, private, and scheduled traffic. It ranges from high-performance jets to Cessna 152 trainers. Many use Cessna 210 aircraft for charter and fly-in safaris in Namibia. Scenic-Air provides regular charter services from Eros Airport using Cessna Centurion equipment.

Eros Airport handles around 150 to 200 movements daily which equals about 50000 per year. In 2016 this airport served 74356 passengers. Wilderness Air offers transfers to Maun, Livingstone, Lusaka and Victoria Falls. Westair Aviation scheduled passenger services to six new destinations in Namibia and South Africa in April 2018. Air Namibia moved its Lüdertiz and Oranjemund operations here in late July 2019.

The airport sits 1699 meters above sea level. It features two asphalt runways. Runway 01/19 measures 2229 by 30 meters. The secondary runway 09/27 measures 1005 by 30 meters. Eros Airport also provides car rentals retail food and beverages advertising and aircraft hangars. The aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting holds a Category 4 certification.

FlyNamibia operates scheduled services to Lüdertiz Ondangwa Oranjemund and Rundu. Bay Air Aviation offers cargo services to Johannesburg-O.R. Tambo.

In January 2008 a Cessna 210 crashed after takeoff. Sadly the pilot and all six tourists died. The Directorate of Aircraft Accident Investigations ruled it pilot error.

The runway at Eros Airport was built in 1956. It was designed for smaller planes. The airport needed rehabilitation. The Embraer ERJ-135 a twin-engine jet was the critical design aircraft for the project. Lithon was also asked to accommodate the Presidential Dassault Falcon 7X in its solution.

A visual and technical pavement assessment revealed the runways were old dry and brittle. The pavements had reached their end of design life. Rehabilitation was urgent. Lithon was tasked with bringing Eros Airport in line with international aeronautical standards.

Work on the holding action officially began on August 5th 2020. Specialist equipment was shipped in from South Africa. The airport remained operational during daylight hours throughout the construction period. Work had to be undertaken during the night.

Eros Airport Tower stands as a testament to Namibia’s aviation progress. From handling thousands of passengers to undergoing constant improvements it plays a vital role. As you leave Eros Airport Tower remember the stories it holds. Think of the planes that have soared from its runways. This is a place of journeys taken and dreams realized.
