Was Ernst August Friedrich Gronow a visionary or just a lucky politician? Here lies Ernst August Friedrich Gronow. He was a prominent figure in Stralsund’s history. Gronow served as the city’s mayor. Later, he became its Oberbürgermeister.

Ernst August Friedrich Gronow was born in Greifswald in 1856. He died in Stralsund in 1932. He dedicated much of his life to public service. Gronow studied law at several prestigious universities. These included Leipzig, Heidelberg, Berlin, and Greifswald. After his studies, he trained in courts across the region.

In 1884, Gronow became a Ratsherr in Stralsund. This was a lifetime appointment. By 1890, he had risen to the position of Syndikus. In 1898, he was elected First Mayor. Then in 1909, Gronow received the title Oberbürgermeister. This title recognized his outstanding service to the city.

Under Gronow’s leadership, Stralsund experienced significant developments. The fire department was established in 1910. The Hansa-Schule was founded in 1913. Also in 1913, the Stadttheater Stralsund was erected. Gronow initiated the reforestation of the Stadtwald. He also oversaw the construction of the Sundpromenade.

Gronow’s influence extended beyond Stralsund. He chaired the supervisory board of the Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft Stralsund-Tribsees. He was a member of the Prussian House of Lords. Also, he participated in the Provincial Parliament of Pomerania.

However, Gronow’s career wasn’t without challenges. During the November Revolution, the Workers’ and Soldiers’ Council briefly imprisoned him. In 1923, Gronow faced accusations of personal enrichment related to the St. Annen and Brigitten monastery. This involved the resale of cheap flour. Citizens demanded his resignation and a disciplinary investigation. The outcome of this affair remains unknown.

Despite these controversies, Ernst August Friedrich Gronow retired in 1924. Later that year, he was granted honorary citizenship of Stralsund. After a severe illness, Gronow passed away. He was buried with high honors in Knieperfriedhof St. Jürgen.

Ernst August Friedrich Gronow left behind a complicated legacy. He shaped Stralsund’s development. His contributions are still visible today.
