Founded in 1843 Ryland Epworth United Methodist Church stands before you. It’s a testament to faith resilience and community. Three congregations merged to form this vibrant hub. Ryland Church the oldest started in Southwest DC. In 1940 they bought land in Southeast DC. They built their Neo-Gothic sanctuary in 1944. Epworth Church originally in Northeast DC joined them in 1973. Later Anacostia United Methodist Church a 133-year-old congregation also joined. Today Ryland Epworth UMC thrives. It’s a Christ-centered community. It helps disciples grow and spread their faith.

The church’s history is rich. It’s a story of growth adaptation and unwavering faith. Imagine the dedication it took to build the first frame structure in 1894. Then the larger building in 1908. The sanctuary additions and renovations show the church’s evolution. A devastating fire in 1958 almost destroyed the church. Yet the congregation rebuilt. They held services in a school for three years. They moved to their current location in 1961. The final mortgage was burned in 1978 a joyous occasion. The church has undergone several expansions. A Family Life Center new offices and classrooms were added in 1994. The sanctuary chancel was remodeled in 2003. The church’s story is not just about bricks and mortar. It’s about people.
