In 1915, Enskede kyrka opened its doors for the first time. Can you imagine the excitement as the community gathered for the inauguration? The Archbishop of the Swedish Church himself, Nathan Söderblom, led the ceremony. Enskede kyrka stands proudly atop a hill in Gamla Enskede, a testament to the architectural vision of Carl Bergsten. The church, with its whitewashed walls and grey tiled roof, is a beacon in the heart of this charming villa district. Look closely at the windows. They are framed in black and boast a variety of shapes, a subtle reminder of Bergsten’s attention to detail. Step inside and feel the serenity of the space. Above you, a wooden trefoil vault adorned with decorative paintings graces the ceiling. The altarpiece isn’t a painting but a magnificent stained-glass window crafted by N.P. Ringström AB. It depicts Christ’s ascension and bathes the chancel in ethereal light. Near the chancel, you’ll find the original baptismal font. Crafted by sculptor Per Kers, it features a vibrant, polychrome design with Luther roses. It’s a beautiful example of early 20th-century craftsmanship. Enskede kyrka isn’t just a place of worship, it’s a symbol of community and architectural beauty. As you leave its peaceful embrace, take a moment to appreciate its quiet grandeur against the backdrop of Stockholm’s sky.
