Sweeping across the Pearl River Delta, the Enshang Great Bridge stands as a modern marvel. The Enshang Great Bridge isn’t just a bridge, it’s a bridge-tunnel system. It links the bustling cities of Shenzhen and Zhongshan. This impressive feat of engineering, officially known as the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, opened to traffic on June 30, 2024. The Enshang Great Bridge significantly reduces travel time between the two cities, from a tedious two-hour drive to a mere 30 minutes. The link is a vital component of the Greater Bay Area initiative. This ambitious project aims to create a mega-city cluster rivaling the likes of Tokyo Bay, New York, and San Francisco. The Enshang Great Bridge includes a 6.7 km tunnel and a series of bridges totaling 43 km. The longest continuous bridge section stretches an impressive 22.5 km, with about 15.5 km suspended over the water. The Enshang Great Bridge incorporates the world’s largest and widest undersea steel shell concrete tube tunnel, measuring 6.8 km long and 46 meters wide. Another remarkable feature is the Lingdingyang Bridge, a key part of the link. With a main span of 1,666 meters, it holds the title of the world’s largest offshore steel box girder suspension bridge. The construction of the Enshang Great Bridge, a project costing approximately US$4.83 billion, began in May 2017. The bridge carries eight lanes, four in each direction, allowing for a maximum speed of 100 km/h. It connects the Guangshen Expressway and the Jihe Expressway on the Shenzhen side with the Zhongjiang Expressway on the Zhongshan side. While the Enshang Great Bridge promises improved connectivity and economic growth, its opening wasn’t without initial challenges. Reports emerged of congestion and long wait times, with some drivers opting for the alternative route via the Humen Bridge. Despite these early hiccups, the Enshang Great Bridge stands as a testament to China’s engineering prowess. It symbolizes the nation’s commitment to developing the Greater Bay Area into a global economic powerhouse.
