Welcome to Enmore a vibrant suburb steeped in history. It is located just a few kilometres from Sydney’s central business district. Enmore offers a glimpse into Sydney’s rich cultural heritage.
Enmore was named after Enmore House. Captain Sylvester Browne built it in 1835. He was a master mariner with the British East India Company. Browne named his house after a business associate’s estate in Guyana. That estate took its name from Enmore in Somerset England. How interesting.
In 1836 Enmore experienced a rare snowfall. Weather observer T. A. Browne reported the event. He said they made snowballs and enjoyed schoolboy amusements. Imagine that in Australia.
From 1842 to 1883 Enmore House belonged to the Josephson family. After Jacob Josephson’s death his son Joshua Frey Josephson lived there until 1883. Joshua Percy Josephson a son of Joshua Frey was Mayor of Marrickville in 1901. Clara Laura Marian Pearl and Sarah streets are named after five of Joshua Frey Josephson’s daughters. What a legacy.
Enmore is home to Sydney’s oldest running live theatre. The Enmore Theatre was built in 1908. It is a heritage listed building. Many international bands have performed here. KISS Nas and The Rolling Stones have all graced its stage. Before the 1980s it was also a revival cinema. It screened classic and contemporary films.
The former Enmore Post Office is a notable landmark. It was built in 1895. This Federation Queen Anne style building was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon. It stands proudly on the corner of Enmore and Stanmore Roads.
In 1980 Labor politician Peter Baldwin was attacked here. This happened after he uncovered corruption in the local ALP branch. Enmore has certainly seen its share of drama.
Enmore’s population was 3871 in 2021. English is the primary language spoken at home. However Greek is also spoken here. A significant portion of residents identify as having no religion.
The Enmore Theatre is a cultural hub. It hosts live music and comedy shows. The Sly Fox is a well known lesbian/mixed pub. Enmore and Newtown are known for their gay and lesbian population. Enmore also has a goth subculture with speciality stores. This makes Enmore a diverse and interesting place.
Rolf Boldrewood also known as Thomas Alexander Browne lived here. He wrote Robbery Under Arms. Actress Sophie Wilde also calls Enmore home.
