Gazing upon the Engelsbrunnen, one might expect a flurry of angelic figures. But look closer. This fountain, nestled on Wiedner Hauptstraße, tells a different tale. The Engelsbrunnen gets its name from Viktor Edler von Engel, a Ministry of War employee. Upon his death in 1871, his will stipulated the creation of this fountain. He even dictated the figures that adorn it. The fountain depicts a scene from a Viennese legend. A young woman, Elisabeth, sits calmly, braiding her hair. At her feet, two bound men serve as spouts. These are the infamous robber Aufschring and his accomplice Dörlinger. Elisabeth, a clever trader, had outsmarted them both. She lured Aufschring into a trap, disguised as an invitation to sit. Her quick thinking led to their capture, a feat that had eluded authorities. So, the Engelsbrunnen commemorates not only Engel but also Elisabeth’s bravery. This seemingly simple fountain carries a hidden layer of Viennese folklore, a tribute to a woman’s wit and courage.
