What if these ruins could whisper tales of dukes and battles? This is the Engelburg. It is a place where history and mystery intertwine.

Welcome to the remnants of the Engelburg. It once stood proudly overlooking the Neckar River. Today, we explore its past. We uncover the secrets hidden within these stones.

The Engelburg’s story possibly starts around 700 AD. Back then, it was known as Biberburg. Legend says Alamannenherzog Gotfrid gifted it to the Kloster St. Gallen. This Biberburg was located near the Biberbach. This is now known as Feuerbach. The burg stood along Rotweg. This was an old road leading to the Neckar.

Fast forward to the 13th century. Around 1260 to 1280, the Engelburg was rebuilt. Historians attribute this construction to the Edelfreien von Blankenstein. Like Burg Hofen across the Neckar, it likely protected the Neckar ferry.

The Engelburg faced destruction during the Reichs- und Städtekriege. Whether it was rebuilt remains unconfirmed. By 1509, the Ritter von Kaltental owned the Engelburg. Over time, it diminished in importance. Historical records mention it less and less.

Now, about the Engelburg’s name. Some say it honors Engelbold von Kaltental. He was a respected knight. His name meant bold as an angel. Others believe a chapel dedicated to Archangel Michael stood here. This explanation is less probable though.

Today, only the foundations remain. The small castle once covered 480 square meters. Its walls were 1.8 to 2.2 meters thick.

As you stand on the Engelburg’s plateau, imagine life in the Middle Ages. Picture knights and travelers passing by. Envision the strategic importance of this location. Look at the Neckar, the Vier-Burgen-Steg, and Burgruine Hofen.

Take a moment to enjoy the view. Appreciate the history beneath your feet. The Engelburg may be in ruins. Yet its story continues to resonate through time. It connects us to Stuttgart’s rich heritage.
