Let’s step back in time. Picture Engadine as crown land. It was once part of Heathcote village. Charles McAlister purchased land here. He built Sunbeam cottage in 1888. This made him Engadine’s first European settler. McAlister played a vital role. He helped form Sutherland Shire’s first council in 1906.
In 1916 McAlister suggested giving crown land to returned soldiers. By then other families had settled here. They sought tranquility and rural charm. Arthur Bower established a poultry farm. He was one of the first soldiers to take up land.
The Illawarra Railway line opened but lacked a platform for Engadine. Locals formed the Engadine Platform League around 1919. They lobbied for a platform. In 1920 their hard work paid off. They built a platform. This encouraged further land subdivision.
The hardships of the Depression led to more families moving here. A School of Arts formed in 1931. It provided social activities. Engadine became a village in 1933. A school opened its doors.
Father Thomas Dunlea opened a home for boys in 1940. They learned general education plus butchery and baking. The De la Salle Brothers took over care in 1942. By 1940 poultry farms numbered 23. A shopping area grew around the Princes Highway.
