What echoes in a name? It is Emilii Gierczak, a street that commemorates a Polish soldier. She fought during the Second World War. Emilii Gierczak was no ordinary soldier. She was a symbol of courage and resilience.

Emilii Gierczak was born Emilia Gierczak in 1925. Her birthplace was Mashiv in Volhynian Voivodeship. This area was part of Poland at the time. Her parents were Jozef and Leontyna Gierczak. They named her after Emilia Plater. Plater was a national heroine.

After the Soviet Union invaded eastern Poland, her family was deported. They were sent to Arkhangelsk. There she worked in a bakery.

In 1943, both Emilii Gierczak and her father joined the army. She trained at the Infantry Officers School in Ryazan, Russia. Gierczak became a second lieutenant. She was assigned to the Emilia Plater Independent Women’s Battalion. It was part of the Polish 1st Tadeusz Kościuszko Infantry Division.

In March 1945, fierce fighting took place at Kołobrzeg. Gierczak received an order to seize a defended building. Instead of waiting for night, she chose a daytime assault. She did not want to be seen as weak. As she urged her troops forward, she was shot. The bullet hit her forehead. Emilii Gierczak died instantly. Inspired by her sacrifice, her troops avenged her. They captured the building.
