Emerton

Did you ever hear of a suburb named after a storekeeper? Emerton, a suburb of Sydney, owes its name to William Frederick Emert. He was a German immigrant who arrived in Australia in 1853. Emert settled in Mount Druitt in 1861. He became a storekeeper and postmaster. He also played a key role in establishing the Wesleyan Church in Australia. Emerton is located 46 kilometers west of Sydney’s central business district. It’s part of the City of Blacktown local government area. The suburb sits within the Greater Western Sydney region. Emerton is mainly residential. It has limited commercial activity centered around the Charlie Lowles Leisure Centre. This leisure center, formerly known as the Emerton Leisure Centre, and before that, the Emerton Pool, underwent extensive renovations. It reopened in August 2006. The center boasts indoor and outdoor swimming pools. There’s even a hydrotherapy pool. Outdoor facilities include a beach volleyball court. Emerton is bordered by Popondetta Road to the south and east. This road continues north around Popondetta Park. The western boundary follows Halmahera Creek. The creek meets Luxford Road, which then forms the boundary south to Popondetta Road. Emerton is conveniently located near the Westlink M7 motorway. This provides easy access to the Great Western Highway and the M4 Motorway. These roads connect to western Sydney and eastward to the city center. Several private bus companies link Emerton to train stations in Mount Druitt and St Marys. Popondetta Park is a large recreational area in Emerton. It sits between Popondetta Road and Halamahera Creek, stretching from Jersey Road to Bougainville Road. The park features sporting fields for cricket, netball, rugby league, and soccer. Emerton also has cycleways that connect to Mount Druitt and the M7 cycleway. This further connects to cycleways on the M4 and M2 motorways. Emerton Village is the main shopping center in the suburb, located near the intersection of Jersey and Popondetta Roads. It includes a post office, a supermarket, a service station, medical centers, take-away food options, and even a hotel.
