EMEF Ulysses da Sylveira Guimaraes is a vibrant hub of learning and culture nestled in the Jardim Santa Fé neighborhood of São Paulo. The school is located on Rua Conde de Lancastre and serves as a testament to the power of community engagement and the importance of a well-rounded education. It boasts a dedicated staff, 17 classrooms, and a student body of 985 eager learners as per a November 2023 record. EMEF Ulysses da Sylveira Guimaraes isn’t just about reading, writing, and arithmetic. This school offers a rich educational experience, complete with facilities like covered and outdoor sports courts, patios, a reading room, a library, a kitchen for school meals, a computer lab, and even musical instruments. In 2015, a teacher named Cristina Ribeiro had a vision. She wanted to go beyond traditional teaching methods. She wanted to incorporate dance, coordination, and body awareness into the curriculum. That vision blossomed into the “Dançando na Escola” (Dancing in School) project. The project later expanded to include elements of music history and hip-hop culture, with Professor Shirley Patriota joining the team. The “Dançando na Escola” project blends theoretical learning with practical application. Students delve into the history of music, especially music of the African diaspora. They then put their knowledge into action, learning and creating hip-hop choreography. The project isn’t just about movement; it’s about understanding and appreciating the rich cultural tapestry of Brazil. The choice of hip-hop is deliberate. It connects students to elements of Black culture that are deeply woven into Brazilian identity. It also helps break down stereotypes and fosters acceptance. The students’ dedication and passion culminated in memorable performances, both within the school and out in the community. In 2015, they visited the Graffiti Biennial and showcased their talents to the local neighborhood. The following year, they were invited by the Municipal Secretariat of Human Rights to perform at the opening of the Human Rights Education Award ceremony at Ibirapuera Auditorium. The project’s positive impact is undeniable. It boosts students’ self-esteem, improves their coordination and discipline, and broadens their cultural horizons. EMEF Ulysses da Sylveira Guimaraes continues to grow and evolve. It’s formed a partnership with the community project “Família Unidos pela Dança” (Family United by Dance). This collaboration involves former students of the “Dançando na Escola” project, creating a beautiful cycle of learning and community engagement.
