The architects designed the building to evoke the feeling of a Nigerian village. The individual structures are arranged around a central courtyard under a shared roof. The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria stands on International Court NW in the Cleveland Park neighborhood. This diplomatic mission represents Nigeria in the United States. The current ambassador is Uzoma Emenike. This impressive building boasts nearly 100,000 square feet. It’s one of the largest structures in the International Drive diplomatic district. Construction began in the late 1980s. However, political instability in Nigeria delayed the project for almost a decade. The National Capital Planning Commission finally approved the project on March 4, 1999. Construction finished around 2002. Then on May 5, 2003, Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar officially opened the embassy. The building’s unique design earned it a 2002 award for excellence in architecture from the Washington chapter of the American Institute of Architects. It was even featured on the cover of the Winter 2003 issue of their magazine, Architecture DC. In 2011, the embassy became a focal point for a protest about Biafra. The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria serves as a vital link between Nigeria and the United States.
