Is it true that this building behind me has fostered warm relations between India and Mongolia since the 1950s? This is the Embassy of India in Ulaanbaatar. It stands as a symbol of the strong bond between these two nations.
India was the first country outside the Soviet bloc to recognize Mongolia. This happened formally on December 24, 1955. The relationship has only grown stronger over the years.
In January 1956, Mongolia’s first ambassador to India presented his credentials. Simultaneously, India appointed its first ambassador to Mongolia. This was R.K. Nehru. He was the cousin of then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Though the first ambassador assumed his position in 1956, India didn’t establish its embassy in Ulaanbaatar until 1970. Sonam Norbu, a diplomat from Ladakh, became India’s first residential ambassador here.
Many high-profile visits have occurred between the two countries. India’s former president S. Radhakrishnan visited in 1957. Yumjaagiin Tsedenbal, Mongolia’s prime minister, reciprocated in 1959. Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the first Indian prime minister to visit Mongolia in 2015.
India played a vital role in Mongolia’s membership to key international forums. This included the United Nations in 1961. Mongolia co-sponsored a UN resolution with India and Bhutan in 1972. This was for the recognition of newly liberated Bangladesh.
Since 1973, cooperation has increased significantly. In 1994, the Treaty of Friendly Relations and Cooperation was signed. This was followed by joint declarations in later years.
Bilateral cooperation now includes defense, security, trade, and civilian nuclear energy. Mongolia has vast reserves of coal, petroleum, and uranium. In 2009, Mongolia was among the first to sign a uranium deal with India.
India has helped modernize Mongolian weaponry. Joint defense exercises called Nomadic Elephant take place regularly. India also participates in the Khaan Quest training exercise hosted by Mongolia.
The Embassy of India also provides essential services to Indian citizens. It assists during emergencies like natural disasters or political unrest. The embassy can also help with legal issues. It can connect citizens with local legal representation. If you lose your passport, the embassy can assist in issuing a replacement.
If arrested, the embassy can provide information on local legal procedures. However, it cannot intervene in the legal process. In short, the Embassy of India here in Ulaanbaatar stands as a crucial link. It strengthens the partnership between India and Mongolia. It promotes mutual understanding and support.
