Right here, between the White House and the Capitol, stands a testament to a unique relationship. This is the Embassy of Canada in Washington D.C. It is not just a building. It is a symbol of the enduring bond between Canada and the United States.
The Embassy of Canada’s story begins long before its current location. Originally, the Canadian embassy resided on Embassy Row. By 1969, the embassy needed more space. So, Canada purchased a vacant lot on Pennsylvania Avenue in 1978 for $5 million.
Fast forward to May 3, 1989. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney officially opened the new Embassy of Canada. Today, about 265 Canadian diplomatic staff work here. The Embassy of Canada also houses representatives from Ontario and Alberta.
Arthur Erickson, a celebrated Canadian architect, designed the building. He aimed to capture the essence of Canada. Erickson used open spaces and water features in his design.
Notice the courtyard. It is a key feature. The courtyard includes the sculpture Spirit of Haida Gwaii by Bill Reid. It once graced Canada’s twenty-dollar bill. The sculpture sits in a pool. This symbolizes Canada’s ocean borders.
Take a look at the Rotunda of the Provinces. Its domed roof rests on 12 pillars. Each pillar displays the crest of a Canadian province or territory. The seal above the entrance represents Nunavut. Step inside the rotunda and make some noise. You will notice the echo.
James Baker, a former U.S. Secretary of State, once spoke about the Embassy of Canada. He said it shows Canada’s face to the world. He also noted its warmth and openness.
Inside the Embassy of Canada, art plays a significant role. There are four collections on display. These include the Foreign Affairs Fine Art Collection and the Canada Council Art Bank. The embassy also showcases the Imperial Oil and Scotiabank collections. These artworks promote Canadian culture.
The Embassy of Canada also hosts many events. Visiting ministers often come here. The embassy also holds diplomatic, military, and public functions.
Canada is the only country with its embassy on the presidential inaugural route. This underscores the close ties between the two nations.
Kirsten Hillman currently serves as Canada’s Ambassador to the United States. She assumed the role in March 2020.
