Dare to step back in time. We are now standing in the heart of Ellicott City Maryland. This unincorporated community holds stories within its historic district. Ellicott City stands as the county seat of Howard County. It is also the most populous unincorporated county seat in the United States.

Ellicott City’s story began with three Quaker brothers. John, Andrew, and Joseph Ellicott sought a place for their flour mill. In 1772 they chose this picturesque wilderness. They named it Ellicott’s Mills. The Ellicott brothers transformed the area into a hub of milling and manufacturing. Ellicott’s Mills became one of the largest such towns in the East.

The Ellicott brothers revolutionized farming. They convinced farmers to plant wheat. This was instead of tobacco. They introduced Plaster of Paris fertilizer. This revitalized the depleted soil. Ellicott City was innovative.

In 1830 Ellicott’s Mills marked a milestone in railway history. It became the first terminus of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad outside of Baltimore. The B&O was the first commercially operated cargo and passenger railroad in the country. The Ellicott City Station still stands today. It is a living history museum. It is also a National Historic Landmark. This station proudly bears the designation as the “Oldest surviving railroad station in America”.

But Ellicott City faced its share of adversity. The town is prone to flooding. The Patapsco River and Tiber River have brought devastation. Major floods struck in 1868 and 2016. The flood of 1868 washed away houses. It tragically killed many residents. The 2016 flood caused severe damage. It impacted historic Ellicott City.

In 1867 Ellicott’s Mills transitioned. It secured a city incorporation charter. The name changed to “Ellicott City”. However Ellicott City gave up its charter in 1935.

Despite challenges Ellicott City has shown resilience. After Hurricane Agnes in 1972 Ellicott City underwent a renaissance. It embraced its history. Ellicott City became known as a “boutique town”.

Today Ellicott City has antique shops. It also has restaurants and craft stores. The Ellicott City Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978.

The Wilkins-Rogers Mills completes transition of milling operations from Washington D.C. to Ellicott City Maryland in 1975. It is the last commercial grist mill operating in the state of Maryland.

As you explore Ellicott City remember its past. Remember the vision of the Ellicott brothers. Remember its role in transportation history. Finally remember its resilience in the face of natural disasters. Ellicott City stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of community.
