“A soldier in the army of Israel.” These words echo through history. They were spoken by Eli Cohen shortly after his capture in Syria. Today we stand before the Eli Cohen Synagogue. It serves as a memorial to his life and sacrifice.

The story of Eli Cohen is one of bravery and espionage. He was born in Alexandria Egypt in 1924. Cohen’s family had strong ties to Syria and Jewish traditions. He would later become Israel’s most famous spy.

In the 1960s Syria posed a significant threat to Israel. They fired mortar shells into Jewish settlements. The Golan Heights were a strategic point. Israel needed intelligence. Eli Cohen was the man for the job.

Cohen was recruited by Israeli intelligence. He underwent intensive training. He learned Arabic Syrian customs and espionage techniques. He created the persona of Kamal Amin Taabes a Syrian businessman.

In 1961 Cohen moved to Buenos Aires. He established his cover within the Syrian community. He cultivated relationships with diplomats and military officials. This included Colonel Amin al-Hafez a future Syrian Prime Minister.

Cohen’s connections led to an invitation to Damascus. He posed as a returning native eager to invest in Syria. He quickly gained the trust of high-ranking officials. They shared state secrets with him.

From 1962 to 1965 Eli Cohen transmitted vital information to Israel. He used a hidden radio transmitter. His intelligence was crucial. It helped Israel understand Syria’s military capabilities.

One of Cohen’s most famous achievements involved the Golan Heights. He visited the area with Syrian officers. He learned the exact positions of Syrian guns and fortifications. He even suggested planting trees to provide shade for the soldiers. These trees later served as markers for Israeli forces.

The information Cohen provided was invaluable. It played a key role in Israel’s victory in the Six-Day War in 1967. The capture of the Golan Heights secured Israel’s northern border.

But Cohen’s success came at a great cost. In January 1965 Syrian intelligence discovered his transmissions. He was captured tortured and sentenced to death. Despite international appeals he was publicly hanged in Damascus in May 1965.

Eli Cohen’s legacy lives on. He is remembered as a hero who risked everything for his country. The Eli Cohen Synagogue stands as a testament to his courage and dedication. It reminds us of the sacrifices made to protect Israel. His story is a reminder of the price of freedom. It is a story of unwavering commitment to one’s nation. He will always be remembered.
