Nestled amidst the serene landscape of Fairfax Station, Virginia, stands the Ekoji Buddhist Temple. A beacon of tranquility near the bustling energy of Washington, D.C., Ekoji’s story begins not within its peaceful walls, but with a simple wish. In 1981, a group of Shin Buddhist families yearned for a place where their children could learn the Dharma. Guided by the Reverend Kenryu Tsuji and his wife, their dream blossomed into the Ekoji Buddhist Temple. The name “Ekoji” translates to “Temple of the Gift of Light,” a fitting title for a place dedicated to illuminating the path to enlightenment. Initially housed in a modest office condominium in Springfield, Virginia, the growing sangha envisioned a larger space. This dream materialized in 1998 with the construction of the current temple in Fairfax Station. The realization of this vision was made possible through the combined efforts of Reverend Tsuji, a former Bishop of the Buddhist Churches of America, and Reverend Dr. Yehan Numata, a Japanese businessman and devout Jodo Shinshu Buddhist. Dr. Numata also founded the Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai, or “Society for the Promotion of Buddhism,” furthering his dedication to sharing the teachings worldwide. Ekoji Buddhist Temple is not just a place of worship; it is a vibrant community. It is affiliated with the Buddhist Churches of America, the oldest Buddhist organization in the mainland United States, and receives support from BDK America. The temple’s programs are designed to foster understanding of the world through a Buddhist lens, providing a sanctuary for its members. Ekoji’s inclusive nature welcomes people from all backgrounds to its English-language services and educational programs. Within the temple’s tranquil embrace, the rhythmic pulse of Nen Daiko, a taiko drumming ensemble, resonates, adding another layer to the rich tapestry of Ekoji’s offerings. As you stand before the Ekoji Buddhist Temple today, remember its humble beginnings and the unwavering dedication of those who brought it to life. It serves as a testament to the power of community, the enduring strength of faith, and the radiant gift of light that continues to shine brightly within its walls.
