Eishin-ji Temple began its journey in 1636. It was founded by Okaji no Kata. She was a concubine of the powerful Tokugawa Ieyasu. After embracing the monastic life, she took the name Eishoin. From this name, Eishin-ji Temple derived its identity.
Interestingly, Eishin-ji Temple occupies land with a compelling past. It is believed to be the former residence of Ōta Dōkan. He was an ancestor of the architect behind Edo Castle. This link adds another layer to the temple’s historical significance.
Okaji no Kata’s story is intertwined with the Tokugawa clan. She bore Ieyasu a daughter named Ichihime. Sadly, Ichihime died young. Following this loss, Ieyasu asked Okaji no Kata to become the adoptive mother of Tokugawa Yorifusa. He later ruled over the Mito Domain.
Notably, Eishin-ji Temple has close ties to the Mito Domain. Gyokuhōseiinni, the founding priestess, was Yorifusa’s daughter. For many years, princesses from the Mito Domain became priestesses here. This led to the temple being called “Mito palace” or “Nunnery of Mito”.
