They poured their free time into restoring these mechanical marvels. In 1984, they acquired the 52 7409, a steam locomotive typical of the Franconian region. It arrived from Linz, Austria, more scrap metal than locomotive. Over 20,000 painstaking hours were devoted to its complete disassembly and restoration. By July 1998, this iron horse was once again thundering down the tracks, a centerpiece of the Eisenbahnmuseum Würzburg. The museum’s collection extends beyond the majestic 52 7409. It also includes the V 100 1200, a diesel locomotive that once called Würzburg home. Several smaller Köf locomotives, essential for maneuvering within the museum grounds, complete the locomotive roster. The Eisenbahnmuseum Würzburg boasts an impressive array of carriages too. Four “Donnerbüchsen” (thunderboxes), built between 1927 and 1930, evoke the golden age of rail travel. Three Umbauwagen from the 1950s, a dining car from 1929, and a variety of other carriages showcase the evolution of passenger transport.
