“Have you ever paused to consider how a single seed could transform a landscape? Here we are at Eichberg. Eichberg was once known as Schwarzlackenberg. It now stands as a testament to nature’s enduring power.

Let’s take a journey back to the late 19th century. Adalbert Dungel was the forester of Göttweig Monastery. He served from 1877 to 1886. In 1880, he planted seeds of Wellingtonia gigantea here. These are now towering sequoias.

These trees, nicknamed “Adalbert Wellingtonias,” dominate the forest canopy. They reach high above the surrounding trees. The sequoia trees on Eichberg are unique in their size in Austria.

Imagine Dungel carefully placing each seed. He likely envisioned a future forest. He probably didn’t foresee the awe-inspiring giants they would become.

The Eichberg plateau sits at 380 meters. It provides an ideal environment for these trees to thrive.

Our journey to these redwoods can follow the Göttweiger Wald-Erlebniswelt hiking trail. The trail is well-marked. It starts at the parking lot off the main road to Bruckweg. This connecting road runs from Paudorf towards Klein-Wien.

The 2.1-kilometer route is perfect for a walk. It is also good for a short excursion with children. The path winds mostly through wooded terrain.

The Adriatic Sea is about 254 km southwest from here. This coastline is located in Italy. Eichberg is in the Raab rivercatchment. It is part of the larger Danube Region Basin District.

Nearby, you can find Stubenbergsee. It is a bigger lake. Hochwechsel is the nearest mountain. It reaches a height of 1743 meters.

The landscape around Eichberg consists of hills and low mountains. Agriculture is the most common land use in this area.

Eichberg is not just about the trees. It’s about the vision of one man. It is about the transformation of a landscape. It’s a place where nature’s giants touch the sky.
