The legacy of the ehemalige Kinderklinik Glanzing is one deeply intertwined with the advancements in childcare and medicine in Vienna. Right here, in this building, once stood a beacon of hope for mothers and children alike. The ehemalige Kinderklinik Glanzing was born from a place of compassion. It was 1908, during the 60th anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph I’s reign, that a large-scale collection was held under the motto “For the Child”. Two million Kronen, a formidable sum at the time, formed the “Emperor’s Jubilee Fund for Child Protection and Youth Welfare”. This fund, established in 1909, was intended to lay the groundwork for a nationwide childcare network across the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The ehemalige Kinderklinik Glanzing, then known as the “Imperial Institute for Mother and Infant Care”, was a direct result of this noble endeavor. Constructed between 1912 and 1914, the clinic, with its 100 infant beds, 24 children’s beds, and 25 mothers’ beds, began operating on November 8, 1915. The clinic aimed to drastically reduce child mortality rates under the guidance of Professor Dr. Theodor Escherich, a pioneer in infant care, and Dr. Leopold Moll. It was a model project envisioned to set a standard for the entire empire. The institution also became a training ground for doctors, midwives, and caregivers, ensuring the dissemination of this vital knowledge. The building housed 34 interns, 12 nurses, and 15 employees. Interestingly, it was here that Vienna’s first mother consultation center was established. The former clinic is a testament to the power of collective will and the enduring impact it can have on generations to come.
