Built in 1887, the eh. Rathaus Mauer stands as a quiet testament to a bygone era. This unassuming building on Speisinger Straße 256 once housed the bustling heart of Mauer’s local government. Originally, the oldest town hall of Mauer existed from the 17th century. It was located at Maurer Lange Gasse 37. Then, starting in 1778, the local magistrate, and later the mayor from 1850 onwards, held office at Hauptplatz, Speisinger Straße 260-262. Finally, the eh. Rathaus Mauer became the seat of local administration in 1887. In the 1930s, it officially became known as the “Rathaus,” solidifying its role in Mauer’s civic life. The eh. Rathaus Mauer witnessed a dramatic shift in 1938. Mauer was incorporated into Greater Vienna under Nazi rule. This event marked the end of the eh. Rathaus Mauer’s reign as a town hall. However, its story continued. With the 1954 Gebietsänderungsgesetz (Territorial Change Law), Mauer became part of Vienna’s 23rd district, Liesing. Although the district office moved to Liesing, the eh. Rathaus Mauer remained. Today, the eh. Rathaus Mauer serves as a school. Its hipped roof and two-story structure still echo its administrative past. This building, designated as a heritage site, invites us to reflect on Mauer’s journey from an independent village to a part of Vienna’s vibrant tapestry.
