From a military stronghold to a spiritual sanctuary. That’s the incredible journey of Église Réformée in Strasbourg. Right here, where we stand, once echoed the footsteps of German soldiers. Imagine the scene: the year is 1897, and the newly built Evangelische Garnisonkirche, as it was then known, stands proudly. Its 19 entrances, one for each rank in the German army, facilitate the orderly entry of troops. Église Réformée was strategically placed at the confluence of the Ill and Aar rivers. It was a powerful symbol of the German presence in Strasbourg during the Reichsland Elsass-Lothringen period.

Église Réformée, with its soaring twin spires reaching 76 meters, dominates the Strasbourg skyline. Its design, inspired by the Elisabeth Church of Marburg, speaks of a grand, neo-Gothic aesthetic. However, the church we see today wasn’t the original architect’s complete vision. Due to budget constraints and foundation issues, the nave is shorter than initially planned. The intended Latin cross layout became a Greek cross. Yet, this adaptation in no way diminishes the church’s grandeur.

The story of Église Réformée takes a dramatic turn after World War I. With Alsace returned to France, the church’s purpose shifted. It became a place of worship for the Reformed Church of Alsace and Lorraine, its second parish church in Strasbourg after the Bouclier parish. It was renamed Église Réformée Saint-Paul, a nod to the city’s tradition of naming churches after saints, while avoiding direct saint veneration.

The church’s transformation continued. Its interior, once adorned with German imperial emblems, was modified to reflect the Reformed Church’s simpler style. The ornate altar was exchanged for a wooden cross and table, further emphasizing the shift in religious identity. The frescoes and German bible verses were covered, marking a break from the German past.

Église Réformée has also faced nature’s fury. Bombing raids in 1944 destroyed the adjoining chapel and the original stained glass in the choir. A hailstorm in 1958 further damaged the western rose window. Yet, each challenge led to renewal. The chapel was replaced by a modern foyer, the stained-glass windows were redesigned, and the rose window was reimagined with a contemporary flair.

Today, Église Réformée stands as a testament to resilience and transformation. It’s a vibrant university parish, a cultural hub, and a place where history whispers from every stone. Its story reflects the complex history of Strasbourg, a city shaped by shifting borders and evolving identities. It is a place where the echoes of military marches have given way to the harmonious strains of organ music, a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
