Has anyone ever noticed how the spirit of a place can change over time? Right here, before the Église du Sacré-Cœur, in the heart of Strasbourg’s Montagne Verte district, that change is palpable. The Église du Sacré-Cœur wasn’t always here. In the early 1900s, this burgeoning neighborhood, with over 4,000 residents, still belonged to the parish of Koenigshoffen. They yearned for their own spiritual center. In 1910, they got their first church, a charming timber-framed structure dedicated to Saint-Arbogast. It was built on the very spot where the saint once lived. This unique church, one of only two timber-framed churches in Alsace, stands as a testament to the community’s resourcefulness. Due to military restrictions, the area was designated as a non-construction zone. But the determined residents found a loophole and built their beloved Saint-Arbogast Church anyway. Decades later, in 1960, the Église du Sacré-Cœur emerged, a modern counterpoint to its historic predecessor. The Protestant community also established their own presence with the St. Jean parish church in 1958. Today, Montagne Verte boasts four places of worship: Saint-Arbogast, Église du Sacré-Cœur, St. Jean, and a mosque, reflecting the diverse tapestry of this vibrant neighborhood. The Église du Sacré-Cœur stands as a symbol of the community’s growth and evolving spiritual landscape, a modern sanctuary nestled within a neighborhood rich with history.
