Embark on a journey back to 1477. See the Dominican Friars laying the first stones of Église Catholique Saint-Jean-Baptiste. They built it alongside the Saint-Marc Convent. This church, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, has stood as a testament to faith for centuries. Église Catholique Saint-Jean-Baptiste survived the ravages of time, including the devastating air bombings of World War II. While much of the structure was destroyed in 1944, the resilient walls and steeple miraculously remained. A temporary church was erected near the ruins, serving the faithful from 1946 until 1965. The reconstruction of Église Catholique Saint-Jean-Baptiste began in 1962. The church we see today was completed in 1964. The eastern facade still bears the scars of war. But it also displays stunning remnants of frescoes by the artists Werlé and Schwenkedel. Inside, a single nave, bathed in the soft glow of two-lancet windows, invites contemplation. The church also houses a remarkable organ by Curt Schwenkedel. Église Catholique Saint-Jean-Baptiste is more than just a building. It is a symbol of resilience.
