Founded in 1920, the Efferener Ballspiel Club stands as a pillar of football tradition in Hürth. This club is not just a team. It is the oldest football club in the area of Hürth.
The Efferener Ballspiel Club rose through the ranks after World War II. By 1947, they had ascended to the Bezirksliga. Just five years later, in 1952, they reached the Landesliga. This was the highest amateur league in German football at the time.
For two years, the Efferener Ballspiel Club battled in this elite league. They were relegated in 1959 and then they climbed back into the Landesliga. In 1962, they achieved Verbandsliga status. The club was relegated four years later. The Efferener Ballspiel Club then faced a decline, eventually landing in the Kreisliga.
Amidst these challenges, the Efferener Ballspiel Club experienced a notable moment in 1977. The team qualified for the DFB-Pokal main round. Their journey ended swiftly with a first-round loss against SC Westfalia Herne.
Beyond men’s football, the Efferener Ballspiel Club embraces various sports. They have multiple men’s teams and a thriving youth section. The club also supports women’s football. They offer track and field and table tennis.
Several well-known figures have ties to the Efferener Ballspiel Club. Jerome Assauer began his career in their youth teams. Reiner Calmund, ex-manager of Bayer 04 Leverkusen, coached youth players here. Seppo Eichkorn, a German football coach, once played for the club. Matthias Hemmersbach became a goal scorer for the Efferener Ballspiel Club. He then joined 1. FC Köln in 1961. Lars Leese guarded the goal as a youth player for the Efferener Ballspiel Club.
Today, the Efferener Ballspiel Club continues to compete. The first team plays in the Kreisliga B3 Rhein-Erft. Their home ground is the Stadion an der Autobahn. It has a capacity of approximately 4,500. The Efferener Ballspiel Club remains a vital part of Hürth’s sporting community. It promotes both athletic achievement and community spirit.
