Ever considered that a prison cell could birth the concept for a new society? The Edward Gibbon Wakefield Plaque commemorates a man whose time in Newgate Prison led to the founding of Wellington itself.

This plaque marks the spot where Edward Gibbon Wakefield died. He passed away on May 16, 1862 at the age of 66 right here on The Terrace. But his legacy extends far beyond this location.

Wakefield was born in London in 1796. In 1826, a scandalous event landed him in prison. While confined, Wakefield observed the problems of poverty and crime. He conceived a plan for systematic colonization.

His idea was to sell crown lands at a sufficient price. The money would then fund the emigration of a carefully selected cross-section of British society. Not convicts but ordinary citizens. This would solve the issues of poverty in Britain and create a balanced society in the new colonies.

Wakefield outlined his ideas in “A Letter from Sydney.” Published anonymously in 1829, it gained considerable attention. His theories influenced colonization efforts in Australia and South Africa.

He believed in planned settlements. Wakefield thought these settlements would reproduce the best aspects of English society.

The New Zealand Association formed in 1837 thanks to Wakefield’s influence. It later became the New Zealand Company. His brother William arrived in New Zealand in 1839. He was tasked to purchase land from the Māori. These land purchases were controversial raising both legal and moral objections. Yet they paved the way for British annexation.

Wakefield advised Lord Durham on Canadian colonial policy. He advocated for the unification of Upper and Lower Canada. He even briefly served in the Canadian legislature.

Later in his life, Wakefield helped establish Canterbury. This was a Church of England settlement on New Zealand’s South Island. He finally arrived in New Zealand himself in 1853. He became a member of the General Assembly.

The inscription on the Edward Gibbon Wakefield Plaque calls him the principal founder of planned settlement in New Zealand. It also notes his role as a member of the New Zealand Company and a Member of Parliament for Hutt. His system of colonization shaped the early development of this nation.

So, as you stand before this plaque, remember Edward Gibbon Wakefield. Remember a man whose vision transformed New Zealand. A vision born from an unlikely place a prison cell. His story reminds us that even confinement can spark ideas that reshape the world.
