Gazing upon Edisonova transformační stanice, one might initially see just another building. But its walls whisper tales of a transformative past. Edisonova transformační stanice stands proudly in Prague’s New Town, on Jeruzalémská Street, near the Church of St. Henry and Kunigunda. It’s a recognized part of Prague’s historical preservation. This isn’t just any building. It’s a testament to Prague’s electric history.

Edisonova transformační stanice arose between 1926 and 1930. Architect František Albert Libra designed this functionalist masterpiece. It diligently served Prague’s electrical needs until the 1990s. Then, a brilliant transformation of its own began. Between 2005 and 2007, Ladislav Lábus and his architectural studio converted Edisonova transformační stanice. They reimagined it into a mixed-use space, preserving its industrial charm while creating something new.

Edisonova transformační stanice’s design is a fascinating study in functionalism. The building’s massing is complex and layered. Its façade recedes gradually, creating different floor areas for each level above ground. A three-story reinforced concrete wall projects boldly from the side, punctuated by striking horizontal bands of steel windows. This ingenious design facilitated ventilation and cooling. Inside, tall reinforced concrete beams, set in an unusually dense grid, support the ceilings. The building originally featured a kinetic sculpture by Zdeněk Pešánek. This pioneering artist incorporated electric lighting into his works. A 1:2 scale replica of this artwork is displayed on a PRE building in Prague-Vršovice. Edisonova transformační stanice was a pioneer, one of the first large-scale functionalist structures in Prague’s center. Its bold, modern design stood in stark contrast to the historical facades of its neighbors. It paved the way for more progressive buildings, forever changing Prague’s architectural landscape. The station’s name, prominently displayed on its façade, honored the renowned inventor Thomas Edison, a common practice for transformer stations of the time.

Today, Edisonova transformační stanice continues to evolve. The upper floors house apartments. The lower levels offer administrative spaces. Its story is one of continuous transformation, a reflection of Prague’s own dynamic spirit. Edisonova transformační stanice is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to Prague’s innovative past and its vibrant future.
