Dare to imagine São Paulo in the 1950s. The decade was a transformative period. The Edifício Viadutos emerged as a symbol of architectural innovation. It reflects the aspirations of a rapidly modernizing society.

The Edifício Viadutos stands before you. It is located on General Craveiro Lopes Square. Its creation is attributed to João Artacho Jurado. He was a visionary developer. He shaped the city’s urban landscape. This building is not just a structure. It is a statement. It embodies a unique blend of styles. These include Art Nouveau and Art Deco. It also showcases Hollywood-inspired glamour.

Initially, critics frowned upon the Edifício Viadutos. They saw its mix of architectural styles as unconventional. Over time, opinions shifted. People started celebrating its distinctive character. The building became an icon of São Paulo’s architectural heritage.

Artacho Jurado designed the Edifício Viadutos with middle and upper-class residents in mind. The building offered more than just housing. It incorporated leisure facilities such as rooftop swimming pools. There were party rooms and bars. These amenities catered to the desires of the upwardly mobile.

The Edifício Viadutos comprises 368 apartments spread across 27 floors. This design reflects the increasing demand for modern living spaces. Its diverse floor plans resulted in eight distinct apartment types. They were well-received by the bourgeoisie of the time. Twelve elevators serve the residents. They ensure easy movement within the building. Only two reach the coveted rooftop.

The rooftop provides a magnificent 360-degree view of the city. It features a party hall. The Edifício Viadutos once had a solar panel. It aimed to lower energy costs. However, it was removed after the building was listed as a historical landmark in 2002.

Artacho Jurado didn’t have formal architecture or engineering qualifications. Other professionals signed off on his projects. Yet his vision remained central.

The Edifício Viadutos was nearly sold out within a week. The Edifício Viadutos also had a bright sign on its roof. This sign helped to keep costs down for the people who invested in it. The Jurado brothers threw parties in the building’s gardens. These parties were written about in newspapers.

The Edifício Viadutos stands as a testament to architectural vision. It reflects a unique moment in São Paulo’s history. The building’s legacy endures. It inspires architects and residents alike.
