A triangular puzzle. That’s what the Edifício Triângulo presents. Its unique shape hints at a story. A story of compromise and vision.

The Edifício Triângulo stands proudly in São Paulo’s Zona Central. Designed by the legendary Oscar Niemeyer it opened in 1955. It’s a testament to Brazil’s economic boom of the 1950s. A time of intense urban growth. A time of soaring skyscrapers.

Initially the Edifício Triângulo was envisioned differently. Niemeyer’s initial design was a prismatic volume. A sleek structure. It was to be clad in three types of glass. It was meant to feature brise-soleils. These sunshades were designed to regulate the sunlight. This was a Manhattan style building. But city regulations intervened. The building’s upper floors had to be set back. This resulted in a less dramatic form. This change is described as resembling a wedding cake. The brise-soleils were removed. The building now receives direct sunlight.

The Edifício Triângulo is more than just concrete and glass. It features a magnificent panel. A work of art by the renowned artist Emiliano Di Cavalcanti. This mosaic adorns the entrance. Sadly this artwork has suffered damage. Homeless people once used it for warmth. This led to parts of the glass tiles falling off. They were replaced with ceramic tiles. These too eventually fell. The panel remains damaged. It was declared a landmark by São Paulo in 2004. Efforts to restore it have been made.

The Edifício Triângulo reflects Niemeyer’s work in São Paulo. It’s considered a ‘renegade phase’. It was a time of experimentation. A time when Niemeyer’s designs faced the constraints of the city. The demands of the real estate market were often at odds with his ideals.

Today the Edifício Triângulo remains a commercial building. It houses shops and offices. Thousands visit daily. But it also serves as a reminder. It stands as a symbol of a bygone era. An era of ambition. An era of architectural innovation. An era where even a master architect like Niemeyer had to adapt. To adapt to the realities of his time.

The Edifício Triângulo’s story isn’t finished. Its future is still being written. It serves as a reminder of São Paulo’s dynamic past. A past that continues to shape its present. This imperfect building is a masterpiece.
