The old, one-story community center from 1947 is gone. In its place stands a sprawling, 16,000 square-foot, multi-story marvel. Edgewood Recreation Center officially opened its doors in December 2019, after a $21 million investment. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser herself cut the ribbon, marking a new era for this vibrant neighborhood. Edgewood Recreation Center is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where the community comes alive. Inside, you’ll find a 2,500 square-foot fitness center. It caters to people of all ages and abilities. There’s a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen, ready to inspire culinary creativity. Imagine learning to cook with fresh vegetables harvested from the rooftop garden. Yes, you heard that right. Edgewood Recreation Center boasts the only Department of Parks and Recreation center with its own rooftop garden. Beyond the kitchen, a tech lounge awaits, offering a space for learning and connection. The multi-purpose rooms buzz with activity, hosting everything from classrooms to reading groups and community meetings. A basketball court echoes with the sounds of friendly competition. Stepping outside, you’ll discover a world of recreation. A splash pad with a waterfall offers a cool respite on warm days. An amphitheater sets the stage for community gatherings and performances. Children’s laughter fills the playground, while tennis and basketball courts beckon athletes of all skill levels. Walking trails wind through the grounds, inviting leisurely strolls. Picnic and grill areas provide the perfect setting for outdoor feasts. A baseball and softball field rounds out the impressive array of outdoor amenities. Edgewood Recreation Center goes beyond recreation. It embraces sustainability. Over 100 new trees grace the landscape. The building incorporates recycled materials, minimizing its environmental impact. Outdoor solar charging stations provide a convenient and eco-friendly way to power your devices. Edgewood Recreation Center also prioritizes accessibility. ADA-compliant routes ensure that everyone can enjoy the facilities. In a power outage, the center becomes a lifeline for the community. A natural gas-powered generator allows the facility to operate indefinitely, making it the first DPR center with this crucial feature. Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie, who grew up near the old Edgewood fieldhouse, spoke of his pride in the new center. He highlighted its role as a gathering place for people of all ages to engage in athletic, fitness, social, and cultural activities.
