Beneath the gaze of Table Mountain, Ebenezer Community Church stands as a testament to faith and perseverance. The story of Ebenezer Community Church begins not within its walls, but on the slopes of Days Mountain. In the heart of the community, Bishop Dawn Sutherland felt a calling. She began her ministry in the most humble of settings: her veranda and the shade of trees. Prayer meetings, fasting services, and bible studies filled the air with spiritual fervor. In 1988, this burgeoning faith community took on a name: Christian Community Church. The church secured a piece of land and erected a temporary structure. Slob walls and a borrowed tarpaulin from the Urban Development Commission formed their first sanctuary. This makeshift building also hosted a crusade, drawing more souls to the growing congregation. Through the contributions of believers, a concrete foundation was laid. However, the tarpaulin roof remained a vulnerable shield against the elements, eventually succumbing to the relentless Cape Town rain. Years passed, and then, a team of missionaries from the United States arrived, guided by providence. In a remarkable feat of faith and labor, they erected a permanent building in just three and a half days, complete with additional seating. As the church continued to flourish, a new name was revealed through prayer and prophecy: Ebenezer Community Church. “Hitherto hath the Lord helped us,” the name proclaimed, echoing the journey of faith and resilience. The name Ebenezer became a symbol of God’s unwavering support. It served as a reminder of the community’s humble beginnings and the miraculous growth they had experienced. Today, Ebenezer Community Church continues its mission. It offers a place of worship, fellowship, and spiritual guidance to all who enter its doors. From a simple gathering under trees to a permanent sanctuary, the story of Ebenezer Community Church is a testament to the power of faith. It is a symbol of the strength of community. It is a tribute to the unwavering belief that, indeed, hitherto hath the Lord helped us.
