From a humble beginning in a home, Ebenezer Baptist Church has grown into a Vancouver landmark. In 1927, fifteen German-speaking believers, originally from the Canadian Prairies, formed the Erste Deutsche Baptisten Gemeinde of Vancouver. They held services in a rented store at Main and Marine. Later, they moved to a “little brown church” on 63rd Avenue, holding their first Christmas program there. The congregation outgrew that space and relocated to Maple Hall on Fraser Street, north of 49th Avenue. Recognizing the need for their own building, they chose a site at 659 East 52nd Avenue. Teams of horses and scrapers excavated the basement for this new Ebenezer Baptist Church. The church became a prominent part of the community. During the 1930s depression, an influx of people from the Prairies swelled the church’s attendance. This led to an expansion in 1935. In 1939, the church officially became Ebenezer Baptist Church. By the late 1940s, services transitioned to English. Continued growth led to the acquisition of the current site at 6858 Fraser Street. The groundbreaking was in 1954, with much of the construction done by volunteers. The cornerstone was laid in 1955, containing a time capsule of church history. The new Ebenezer Baptist Church opened in 1956. A parsonage followed in 1957. The church became debt-free in 1960. A three-story education wing with a gymnasium was added in 1967. Music has always been central to Ebenezer Baptist Church, featuring various choirs and musical programs. The church thrived in the 1970s and 1980s with programs for all ages. Ebenezer Baptist Church, like many urban churches, faced challenges in the following decades due to shifting demographics and economic factors. Through prayer and dedication, the church continues to serve its community at its Fraser Street location.
