This isn’t just any courthouse. The E Barrett Prettyman Federal Courthouse houses the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. It also houses the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Since 2009 the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court meets here.
Construction began in 1948 and finished in 1952. President Harry S Truman laid the cornerstone. The building is a prime example of Stripped Classicism. This architectural style was popular in government buildings after World War II. The E Barrett Prettyman Federal Courthouse is a nearly unaltered example of this style. It’s a non-representational abstraction of classical architecture. The design is simple yet elegant. It emphasizes function over grand ornamentation.
The courthouse was one of the last additions to the Judiciary Square and Municipal Center complex. This complex has been an important civic area since the 1820s. Its location is significant. It sits across from the East Building of the National Gallery of Art. The building was renamed in 1997. It was renamed to honor E Barrett Prettyman. He was the former Chief Judge of the U S Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The courthouse was also added to the National Register of Historic Places. It is also a contributing property to the Pennsylvania Avenue Historic Site.
In 2006 an annex was added. It is called the William B Bryant Annex. It was named after the first African American Chief Judge of the U S District Court for the District of Columbia. The annex contains additional courtrooms and office space. There is even a cafeteria in the rotunda.
