Unique is the word that comes to mind when you see this mosque. The Dživar džamija Donje Čičevo is known for its unique architecture. It is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Dživar džamija Donje Čičevo is located in Donje Čičevo near Trebinje. It is about five hundred meters from the main road to Dubrovnik. You can find it under Strač Hill.

Let’s delve into the Dživar džamija Donje Čičevo history. The mosque’s construction date is not precisely known. It is believed to have been built in 1512. The Bešović, Busuladžić, and Kurtagić families may have helped. These were the first Muslim families in the Dživar area near Trebinje.

Another account suggests it was built before 1686. This was before Herceg-Novi fell to the Venetians. If this is accurate, it predates the Careva and Osman-pašina mosques in Trebinje’s Old Town.

The Dživar džamija Donje Čičevo has a unique feature. Its minaret is the smallest in Herzegovina. A stone alem sits on top. This makes the mosque unique in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Dživar džamija Donje Čičevo has been expanded twice. Sadly, during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it was destroyed in 1993.

The Dživar džamija Donje Čičevo was rebuilt. It reopened on July 26, 2008. The opening was attended by over 2,000 displaced Trebinje residents. They came from Bosnia and many European countries.

Next to the Dživar džamija Donje Čičevo, there used to be a mekteb and a cistern. Their exact construction dates are unknown. In 1939, Hasan-aga Omeragić built a cistern. He brought water to it using a gutter from the mekteb roof.

Before 1993, the Dživar džamija Donje Čičevo also had a Bajraktarska plate. It showed that pilgrims were seen off to Mecca. They were welcomed back here until Austro-Hungarian times. No other mosque in Herzegovina has this plate.

The Dživar džamija Donje Čičevo stands as a symbol of resilience. It represents the enduring spirit of the community.
