Established in 1827 Durbanville High School stands as a beacon of Afrikaans education. It is situated in the heart of Durbanville. Durbanville High School holds the distinction of being the oldest high school in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. Only Simons Town School is older in the Greater Cape Town area.
Durbanville High School began as a school catering to children from Grade 1 to Grade 12. In 1955 the primary section split off. It became Durbanville Primary on separate premises. This separation marked a new chapter. Both schools continued to grow independently.
Initially the school faced challenges. There were problems involving teachers, the state, the church and competition with private schools. Stability arrived in 1887. Mr. CJ Haefele was appointed headmaster. He remained in his position until 1921.
In 1895 Durbanville High School had 95 pupils. By 1921 the number had grown to 131. In 1945 Durbanville High School officially gained high school status. There were 350 pupils. They ranged from sub A to standard 10.
Durbanville High School’s hostel opened in 1942. It provided accommodation for both boys and girls.
The school motto is “Labor Ornat”. This is Latin. It translates to “Work Beautified”. This phrase encapsulates the school’s dedication to cultivating diligence and excellence.
Throughout its history Durbanville High School has seen many headmasters. Mr. HF Mellet was the first. He was appointed in 1827. Mr. C Venter is the current head. He assumed the role in 2020.
Durbanville High School boasts several notable alumni. Amore Bekker is a radio presenter. Jack Parow is a well-known rapper. Angus Cleophas is a Western Province Rugby player. Zanne Stapelberg is an opera singer.
