Question: What if a circle could tell stories? Dupont Circle is a destination neighborhood. It is renowned as D.C.’s welcoming cosmopolitan gathering place. Dupont Circle also refers to a historic district. It is a circular park managed by the National Park Service.

Let’s step back in time. The Army Corps of Engineers began construction of Dupont Circle in 1871. It was formerly called Pacific Circle. In 1882, Congress renamed it Dupont Circle. This was to honor Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont. He was recognized for his Civil War service. A bronze statue was installed in the center of the circle in 1884.

Imagine the Washington of the late 19th century. Mansions rose around Dupont Circle. They housed senators and merchants. Connecticut Avenue became a commercial hub. The traffic circle itself saw changes. Medians were installed. Traffic signals appeared.

But the story of Dupont Circle doesn’t end there. In 1921, the statue was replaced. A double-tiered white marble fountain took its place. Daniel Chester French and architect Henry Bacon designed it. The three figures encircling the fountain’s central shaft symbolize the Sea, the Stars, and the Wind.

Fast forward to the 1970s. Dupont Circle became a haven for the LGBT community. Earthworks, a craft store, opened. It was the city’s first openly gay business that wasn’t a bar. Lambda Rising, a gay and lesbian bookstore, also appeared.

Dupont Circle has always been a place of gatherings. Celebrations and events are held here. The park within the circle is managed by the National Park Service. It is widely regarded as the crossroads of the city. People play chess here. Political rallies take place here too.

Today, Dupont Circle continues to evolve. It stands as a testament to the city’s history. It shows its culture and community spirit. The Dupont Circle fountain remains a landmark. It welcomes all. It invites everyone to share in its ongoing story. It’s not just a circle. It’s a crossroads of history and culture.
